How to Make Your Own Woven Basket Planter?

How to Make Your Own Woven Basket Planter?

Are you exploring ideas to showcase your houseplants that are both aesthetic and functional? Greenery is among the most efficient methods to add final adjustments to any house. Decorative baskets contribute to improving the appearance of your potted plants.

They also serve a variety of purposes in most households. They act as storage, decoration, and, obviously, planters. With this, your indoor planters are ready to look wonderful in almost any corner of the house. Whether you put them in the bedroom, family room, kids' room, or laundry area, their trendy and elegant appearance will provide a magnificent focal point as soon as anyone walks in. They tend to bring refinement to the atmosphere of your home! Such woven baskets seem ideal for those who prefer basic textures and patterns. These woven planter baskets are simple yet stylish and exquisite.

An interesting approach to exhibiting indoor houseplants would be to make a planter basket out of garden branches, vines, or date palm leaves. While the skill of weaving a basket pot is pretty easy to adapt, mastering it can require some practice and effort. However, after you've understood ways to make a basket planter, you may discover that this handcrafted hobby is a relaxing way of spending a gloomy day and killing time. You can even opt to convert this hobby into a small-scale start-up business. Furthermore, you may also DIY your very own basket out of reeds and canes bought online or even from a craft store. Nevertheless, basket planters made from date palm leaves are typically lightweight. They are now commonly produced and cultivated across the world, and may get purchased at specialty marketplaces.

Without further ado, let's get started!

1. Select your basket spokes for the desired pattern

Choose between five and eight twigs-like branches to represent the twine of the basket. These spokes are the verticals that sustain the handmade basket planters. Make a "criss-cross" by placing half of the spokes in one direction. Arrange the remaining cogs atop the previous set, perpendicular to it. The pairs shall crossover approximately halfway across their lengths. As for date leaves, you first may want to scrape the palm using a knife once it has dried to peel the cuticle and split it to the desired size.

2. Weave your way through

After that, weave a flexible vine or branch into or out of the spokes throughout a circular pattern. Both the sets will be "tied" together as a result. Proceed weaving around the cross's center just a few more times. You may want to continue interweaving the pliable vines into and out of the different spokes while you craft your personalized basket. As you work your way through, carefully move the weaved vines near the middle of the criss-cross formed. Slip in the vine or stem-like branch within the weaves as you reach its limit. Replace the old vine with a new strand and continue to weave.

However, you may want to remove any leaves, thorns, or lateral twigs before starting your DIY basket planter and soak up the vines or branches for about 6 to 12 hours. Nevertheless, to give the basket more individuality and charm, you may want to leave the tendrils on the vines.

3. Entwine the sides

Keep up with your pace till your basket planter reaches the required diameter. Subsequently, to shape the sides of baskets, carefully twist the cogs upright. To prevent the planter from being lopsided or tilted/leaning, work gently and provide even pressure to the vines as you weave your way through.

4. Weave towards the top and get rid of any excess twine

Last but not least, once the basket is already as tall as you desire or if you have reached the very last four inches (10 cm) left for spokes, it is time to complete the top as its finishing. Carefully bend each spoke over and press it into the opening formed surrounding the subsequent one. If necessary, you may trim the excess bending cog.

Bonus Tip!

Yet another approach to acquiring a successful planter is simply weaving your handmade basket for a plant by transforming an old basket of fruit into a fashionable woven planter. Moreover, to render the basket hangable, spray-paint the entire piece, then knot using extra thick yarn and attach a link, perhaps a chain or rope. On the contrary, small planter baskets render perfect for some succulents or herbs that don't take up a lot of space and would be a pleasant green spot at your table or windowsill. Additionally, the colors you choose entirely depend on your preferences and the aesthetic you want to achieve. Tropical indoor plants, such as this Aglaonema, can be ideal for such multicolored shades.

Final Thoughts

It is unbelievable how mere woven planters can alter and enhance the look of your house! If you prefer to design your very own planter basket out of eco-friendly materials, date palm leaves are organic and eco-friendly - enough to form a robust holding container that can support larger houseplants. The coils formed by date palm leaves are thick and hefty, allowing you to place them on tabletops or even on the floor. These are ideal for displaying a potted plant, radiating a natural two toned look.
